Overcalls & Take-out Doubles - Examples

Example 1       North opens 1♦
Ideal hand for an Overcall at the 1-level : 1♥

East has a hand of 9½ points, including five hearts headed Q 10 and suit quality (SQ) of 7.

  East
- K 6 3
- Q 10 8 6 4
- 9 5
- K 5 3

Example 2       North opens 1♠
Same hand as in Example 1, but now East would have to overcall at the 2-level. This requires 11+points and a SQ of 8.
East's hand has neither and therefore should Pass.

  East
- 9 5
- Q 10 8 6 4
- K 6 3
- K 5 3

Example 3       North opens 1♠
This hand is strong enough to Overcall at the 2-level and the hearts SQ = 6 + 2 = 8
Therefore East can Overcall 2♥.

  East
- 9 5
- Q 10 9 8 6 4
- K Q 3
- A 4

Example 4       North opens 1♠
East has 12½ HCP, an unbid 4-card major and shortage in Opener's suit
East therefore makes a Take-out Double.
Partner should respond bidding if he holds 4 cards in that suit.

  East
- 9 5
- K 10 9 8
- K Q 3
- A 7 6 2

Example 5       North opens 1♦
East has 12½ HCP, both unbid 4-card majors and shortage in Opener's suit
East therefore makes a Take-out Double.
Partner should respond bidding his 4-card major suit if he holds one.

  East
- K Q 9 5
- K 10 9 8
- 8 3
- A 7 6

Example 6       North opens 1♥
East has strength in Opener's suit and no 4-card spade suit.
He should therefore Pass.

  East
- K Q 9
- K 10 9 8
- 8 3
- A 7 6 5

Example 7       North opens 1♥
East has 16-18 points, is balanced and has two good stoppers in the Enemy suit.
He Overcalls therefore 1NT.

  East
- K 9 8
- K J 9 4
- A 10 3
- A Q 9
